You can keep an eye on KSL, and probably find a set for $30, but you might need a sharpener, or new blades. I found a hand auger plenty adequate for a first year on ice. I can see that late-season super-thick ice can get a bit tiresome - especially if you find you need to move around much. But there's also capitalizing on 'old holes' as others move around. Maybe stick to 6 or 7 inches though.
