The biggest difference in a long versus short rod is going to be casting distance. you're going to be able to cast much farther with a longer rod. I would say if you need to get off the bank a pretty long ways to get into the fish, you should look for a longer rod. If you can settle for closer to shore and be productive, i'd go that route.
