The cabbage was actually from a few years ago. But it did win him the class prize - and he was pretty excited about that. Can't remember what all we did with it, but my wife makes a mean 'slaw. Plus just 'melted' with butter/garlic - the kids like it. (corned beef on the side)
I've been put off of gardening some - cuz didn't seem like the family got on-board eating/harvesting the goods. REALLY hate to grow it and waste it! Though my daughter was excited about planting. A greenhouse has LONG been on the wishlist. (bucket list?[frown])
But grilled veggies - yum.[
] Squash with a simple olive oil/garlic brushing. I did just discover my daughter likes cucumbers. Maybe there's hope! (doesn't like pickles though???)
This is weird - but no-one (but me) seems to like fresh raw tomatoes. My wife likes "sauce", my daughter has even turned to 'sauceless pizza' - basically cheesy bread! MAN I remember eating tomatoes fresh of the vine as a kid - biting into a sun-warmed red, juicy mater! Hmmmm.
We have a "salsa day" at work next friday. Might have to hit the "fruit stand" and get some ingredients. But I'll say - the notion of "HOT" salsa has a VERY wide range of interpretation!!!! (wimps)
One of my favorite simple "salads":
Cucumbers - slices, tomatoes wedged - olive oil/red wine vinegar - salt pepper garlic fresh basil - and some flavored Feta cheese crumbled - topped with fresh Parmesan.
Hate to admit it - but I didn't even plant this year. With the freaky spring, and - well - attentions on fishing mostly - I didn't get to it. Got chives! and some herbs, plus the late attempt at upside down tomatoes (long as the DOG doesn't harvest them! They are NOT tennis balls!!!!)
I do have some pumpkin seeds that make those MONSTER huge pumpkins. Maybe next year.
I got compost mix from our dump by the 'load'. It's really not too expensive, and considering they planted the apple trees with dynamite back when - I thought the soil could use some help!!! Just try not to till too deep! They also offer chips of various sorts. LOTS cheeper than getting bags from the Home-Store! But depends on how much you need too.
You never know what you'll find when you grow a garden - from the grasshoppers to the preying matids - opens things up.
