A lot of good suggestions, and all depends on length of trip. Dinty Moore and Hormel make micro waveable instant meals that can be boiled that are not pricey and pretty good. They are not in a can, plastic, in the supermarkets.
Jalesberg cheese is semi hard and will go a few days. Add to Summer or hard Salami. Rye Krisp or Cibata Bread.
TopRamen with canned chicken or Ham, fresh precut green onions. Another Idea.
If the trip is under 3 days, we have fresh salad, small, fresh grilled zucchini, and small rib eye for the first dinner. Too much I know. Start with steak frozen.
If a group of 4 or more, a backpacking pressure cooker is very good. I would even take one, to double as my large pot for even two of us.
We eat decent, but we scrimp on the wieght every were else.
