I am going with the foul hooked carp theory. I have caught a few large channels on spinners like Mepps. I dont fish spinnerbaits often. A big catfish could give you the tugs you described but a carp hooked in the fin or tail are unbelieveable. I have foul hooked more than a few when fishing for walleye usually with jigs. When I hook one I have no doubts about what I have. They can test your gear.
