Straight Canyon/Cottonwood Creek report
#1
Spent the weekend at Joe's Valley Reservoir--first time there, what a beautiful and fun place. Didn't get a lot of time to fish, but spent from about 7:30 to 8:45 pm on the river--I parked about 1/2 down the canyon next to an old mining car and fished directly beneath it.

Since I've never been there before I don't know if the water was high or not--but it was running pretty clear. I do know the fish were eager to take whatever I threw at them. I used my 12' tenkara rod, fishing only dry flies.

When fishing new water I usually throw 2 flies to see what works. Started with a #16 parachute adams & #24 mosquito. Used a #18 PMD (had a few land on me). Finished with a #14 tan caddis & #14 renegade. Although no fly got skunked, the caddis worked best if for no other reason than the fish seemed to pound it.

Landed 13, had 3 more on, and missed maybe another dozen hits. In fact, caught 3 on my last 4 casts. Most were small--10"ish, but the last few were 12-15".

So if you're thinking of hitting some of the central Utah streams, definitely give Straight Canyon some time.
