It isn't 100% guarantee. There are times I will switch to Nymphs. Absolutely what Old Troller said....switch up size and color and that can be crazy!
I hit one of my favorite Lakes this weekend that I usually ALWAYS catch fish with Chironomids.
I tried all the favorite colors....ended up with Black/blue wire and a white bead and SMALL!!! Like #14. I was fishing in 27' of water with the Chironomid at 19' and a Damsel at 17'. Crazy huh? But actually, I was seeing action at 20' so make them look up.
When it was on...OMG! Hold on, but then it could turn off that fast.
Then it was the sinking line, I use a Type VII, but your III can work, just count to ten or so. A 5' piece of fluoro for a leader and the same fly set up. Cast out 30' of line, let it sink then slow strip in.
One other thing. With this long awaited warm weather, there is tons of food for the fish. There is going to be times you can't BUY a bite.
I found my best times this weekend were 2 to 3:30 pm. And a bit of a chop.
Tkidder, we got to share some water sometime. Maybe I can help you get "HOOKED" so to speak, on deep nymphing.
