i met one group of fishermen last sunday while salmon fishing that were on the super-sportsman side of fishing . at first i didn't know what to make of them , untill i got to know them .
i had started the day at 4 a.m. , strolled over from the campsite to just below the coffer at tippy dam , did i saw strolled ? two hundred stairs is more than a stroll . as i got to the spot , two guys were just leaving rather quickley , i just thought they were snagging fish and thought that i was an undercover d.n.r. or something , they left me the best spot on the river all to myself . what luck !
well luckey for me , not for the guy that had been taken downriver by his big king salmon , those two so-n-so's left with the guys gear too . everyone thought i was in cahoots with the thievs , seems a lot of guys fish in teams there , replacing each other in the good spots after taking rest periods .
not me , i've been riped off before , had my whole house emptied out before, i hate thieves !
anyways the new group of guys came over and asked if i minded sharing the whole , "i'ts your river too " i said , " you don't have to ask me " . they were all close family and friends from the bear area , been fishing together for countless years . it showed too . they shared flys , line and traded rods with each other , even handed there fish on rods to the youngsters to let them enjoy the battle .
they came over and started fishing one at a time , rotating fishing time by limiting there fishing time to only one hook up before the next guy was able to try . all this time jeers came from there friends behind them , " you fish like a girl ", watta you doing , you hold that rod like a snagger " , " hey justin's sister , does your mommy know your hanging out with the big guys?", "are you using bait again , i thought you were a big grown up boy by now " . , snagger , snagger , your mom'b a double bagger !!
i gotta tell you , i was laughing my head off inside , outside thou , i just cracked a
and nodded to show that each dig was a good one .
one of the older guys noticed that my hook up rate was a little lacking for my efforts . came over and started to give me some friendly tips and one fly. hey at this point in time i was ready to try anything , daylight was here already and i knew i only had a few hours before the rains would hit .
i adjusted my set up and got slamed on the second cast , i held on to that freight train with all my strength as it doubled my rod over and peeled off just about all my line , " yea baby , who's your daddy now " i screamed !
big mistake - i just opened the door into there group and made myself a member .
"hey little girl your fishing with us men now , why you holding that rod like you got a big fish or something " , " is this your first fishey , maybe your daddy should have let you practice in the back yard first " on and on it went one dig after another ............
talk about peer pressure under fire , man they just didn't let up !
suddenly came that dreadfull sound , kinda like a .22 being shot off , snap !
i stood there bewildered . wa-happened ? , wheres my line ? my fish ?
i felt a hand on my sholder , and heard the words " good job, that was a fourtey pounder or better " , it was the older guy . the other guys came over and shook my hand and gave me there congradulations on doing a fine job too .
seems the jeers are dished out according to the size and temperment of the fish . later , i spent some more time talking with them and made some new friends .
you just cant help liking a bunch like them , they were the best !
i hope to run into them again this coming weekend , these guys give fishing one heck of a good boost as a sport that promotes fellowship among anglers , not like the thieves that gave it a black eye earlier in the day .
