WOW! Tons of stuff I could reply to. Ron, we have only one Walleye tournament at Salmon Dam each year in June. We also have a Walleye-Bass tournament each year as well. We used to fish at Milner for bass on Saturday then at Salmon for Walleye on Sunday. This year being the first, that we are having both days at Salmon Dam. With three walleye and three bass being weighed in each day. I found your research quite interesting. You did a fantastic job. You also hit it right on the nose about depth of water that the fish come out of. Shallower, being better obviously. Any fish that comes out of water over 25 feet, has a better chance of not making it. I guarantee you that I would not participate in any tournament that had a 25-65 percent mortality rate.
That is just it after reading that there is mortality. I was told today that there was a guy picking up floaters that were still gilling after the tournament. I honestly don't think anyone that is in that tournament knows the actual mortality.
I have to admit when I am doing something that is being scrutinized I tend to not want to see the possibility of my actions being negative. After reading those papers on the subject I am now wondering about them.

I released 26 catfish this weekend that weighed between 8-15 pounds. You can't have LITTLE catfish, if you don't have big ones. On another note, I hope you don't think I was "irate or attacking" you! What I said to you was just an opinion. I think to the guy that said, let the F&G "REGULATE" our fisheries, needs to think about that statement for a minute!!! When has our Government been good at regulating anything? Besides maybe telling people where and when, they can smoke cig. You have to take a piss test to get a job in most places but you don't have to, to receive your Welfare and Unimployment checks. They have actually been very good at NOT regulating anything!
Catfish that are in water with natural reproduction are in no danger of over harvest. I have read many of F&G's research data on them. I have seen the numbers for my self. While I do think there should be a limit on all game fish. At this point cats in the snake river below swan falls are doing fine. I agree Government needs to stay out of our way as US citizens. IDFG are an Idaho agency that we HAVE to rely on. We can give input and ask for information. I have worked with F&G for over 17 years. They will listen, sometimes you need to be more than just a squeaky wheel.

They have regulated many of our hunting units! Take for instance Unit 46&47. Where did the hundreds of Antelope go? Unit 54 used to be one of BEST mule deer areas, not only in the state, but in the Nation! "Our buck to doe ratio is off. So, let us kill more does so it is back on track." You call this regulation?
No argument on my side of the isle. Antelope are a fraction of what they used to be and deer in 47 used to be trophy class. We now have an open hunt on does in 46 for kids. I don't know what they are thinking. Archery tags for antelope need to be CUT to almost nothing instead of unlimited. Rifle tags need to be cut Muzzleloader antelope tags should be about 10 instead of 75. But this is getting way off the original topic.

Oh yeah, they regulate Bass! Can't keep them until they are 12" long! (Are you serious?) You call this regulation? No length limit on walleye, perch, crappie, catfish! Regulation? No (BAG) limit on catfish, perch, bluegill, crappie! Regulation? I witnessed a guy loading almost 400 pounds of catfish into the back of his truck, not to long ago! Regulation? I also witnessed two guys last year, kill close to 200 crappies in one day at SALMON DAM! Regulation??? This lake, has the capabilites of being one of Idahos best fisheries. If we want to (have and keep) good fisheries, we need to (regulate ourselves) in what and how many fish we keep! I can almost guarantee you, that we all know people that have thrown away packages of fish from the past year because they were freezer burnt! Maybe even some of the guys that have had some things to say on this Post!
I agree there should be a slot limit on Walleye. The only size to keep would be 14" to 20" take a picture of the rest. Walleyes have proven to not reproduce in SFCR. The need to protect spawning fish is not a big deal. The only reason to protect the big fish would be a trophy regulation. SFCR is a fickle res. Harvest for most of the year is almost nothing. From June to September is the only months people have GOOD luck catching them.
Perch are a species that can over produce in most waters. In SFCR I don't think that is going to happen due to walleyes being there.
Crappie every where should have a limit of some kind. Cats should have a limit of no more than 6 in waters that are planted by F&G. In the Snake below Swan Falls I think there should be some kind of limit to protect spawning fish. SPawning flatheads should be protected. They are listed as a "trophy" species in Idaho water they should be treated that way. I also would bet that there are people that throw away freezer burned fish. But until you see me throwing away a package you might not want to point a finger at me over using the resource. Remember that tournament does have mortality. Ron
