I have been a "member" since 1997. the fishing articles are geared more for the south east for the most part, where i think they excel is information about tactics and techniques that will work anywhere. I send back the stuff i get that I do not "order" books/videos/gear. If you go to the website and fill out the "feild test application" they will send you free lures/equipment and you just need to test it and make a report on it. I do it all online and with my email and it is pretty efficient. I end up testing about 3 or 4 items a year but the key is to fill out the request form that you WANT to test free gear. It is new items not available in the stores yet, and its for the most part pretty good stuff. I just finished up and eval on a new wake bait that runs 6 inches to a foot deep designed for walleye/bass that is pretty good, i think the field test report was in the last issue, although i forget what it was named, but it has a pretty sweet action and it says the retail price is around 10 bucks. thats almost a whole years worth of "membership dues" right there. the last time I signed up and sent them a check was a coupel years ago for 35 bucks for 3 years and a "bonus" 24 months for early re-subscribing. so 5 years for 35 bucks isnt bad. for the most part, i like the tactics and all especially for the ice fishing, they focus pretty heavily on perch/crappie/trout through the ice which is very applicable here, even some walleye action on the hard stuff. i think they have alot of walleye articles, and a ton of bass, which does not interest me dont like the taste.
If you manage the membership and call them from the get go and "opt-out" of special promotions they will not and can not send you stuff you dont want like one of the old CD music clubs. then maintain the field test stuff and i bet every year I average about 80-100 bucks worth of free stuff for testing it out and reporting it. you can not choose what you test, they select you based on your fishing habits which you indicate when you fill out a form, so the gear you get will "evolve" with your habits. I have not tested anything of value over 100 bucks yet, but hey every item they "give" me is an item i dont have to pay for.
try it out, they have a money back satisfaction gaurantee that if you are unhappy with the "club" for any reason they will give you a full refund of your unused dues, and a 100% back within your first year.
check it out, what have you got to lose... I love Steve Pennaz.
