Larger females produce more eggs than smaller ones, so it does make a difference. And when it comes to fish reproduction, females are more important because often more than one male tries to fertilize one female's eggs. Larger males tend to get priority of the redds, but if all of the salmon were one size, than there would be no picking and choosing.
And just because there is a program set up by Alaska F&G doesn't mean there is evidence to support why they are doing it. Lots that goes into the size of a king, love to see where you have evidence that it is just genetics. The Kenai may not be the river it once was, but I wouldn't place the blame on harvesting of just big kings. There are multiple reasons why the Kenai is not once what it used to be, harvesting of any size kings is a big one, not just the large ones. Look at Northern California Salmon fisheries. Practically the kings were non-existant, with harvesting playing a very minor role in the salmon decline.
Also the picture in the boat is a 20 pounder. Just like I stated before not easy to do that with a 60+. Glad your friends were able to do that. And the section of the Kenai I fished, you wouldn't be able to pull over like that, and I am positive the guide wouldn't have even if it was remotely possible. So what section of the Kenai have you fished, where it was possible to do this????
