I don't think you can take the fish out of the water to take a photo. And when you are dealing with fish over 60, it is not easy to take a photo. But I wanted the fish anyways and released a number of fish the same size or larger than the only ONE I kept.
It's certainly your choice and well within the law to bag a hawg like that one. Think of it this way though, the Kenai gets hammered! If everybody just takes one that sure cleans out the gene pool of big fish. The dudes I know that hit the Kenai get in the water with the hawgs and get photos/length/girth measurement and send it on its way without ever removing the fish from the water. A picture or replica mount is worth 1000 words a tomato buck 60lber is a ton of so so meat.
You have no leg to stand on with the gene pool argument. Would you be saying the same thing if it was a 40 pounder or 20 pounder. The larger fish I caught were all males and you don't have any evidence that 60 pound fish produce larger fish than the 30 pounders.
I have no interest in a replica or a reel fish on my wall, it doesn't go with the decor in the houses I own. I do however like a photo with me and the fish, but on the Kenai, I do think you have to keep the kings in the water and when you are fishing in a boat, it is not easy to take a photo with a 60 + pounder. All of the other larger fish I caught, I took a photo of in the net and released. But got plenty of photos and meat from the one king I kept.
I almost forgot to ask, have you been to the Kenai? It is a big river, lots of different spots to fish and some are not conducive to getting out of a boat and taking a picture in the water.
