Dave T makes a good point. For a starter bass rod I'd get a med. with a fast tip so when you use smaller lures, you won't rip the trebles out of their mouth. A 7ft one pc rod should work well. I like 8 lb braided line for those fish as well. I'm a long time shimano fan, but many companys make quality equipment. 2500 series on the reel should do you well. Not a cat fish fisherman, so I'll pass that along to the other guys.
