An easy way to Know your X on fly tippet is a general rule of thumb...take the X number and subtract from 9. So a 5X is 4 lb. or around that as all companies are not created equal.
Tippet material is smaller diameter lb. for lb than regular mono or fluoro fishing line, but in answer to you question, I very seldom use tippet material. I use 2lb, 4lb, 6lb, 8lb, and 10lb fluoro and I prefer P-Line 100% fluoro.
A lot of guides use regular mono/fluoro as it is much cheaper.
Learn a good blood knot and get the tool!!!! Worth it's weight in.....well worth it!
