If they say the boat is rated at 10hp, then don't go over that. Transom may not take more motor.
First - the project looks great. I've thought of adding platforms and compartments, but don't want to add too much more weight. I've got nothing a beautiful as that Searay - just a 12' flatbottom.
So I've faced the same dilemna about engine power - especially after my 6HP Johnson lost compression and decided not to run any more. Wanted "more power" if I was getting a new one anyway. But how much is too much? My boat's so old there is no placard that tells you it's rating. (the VIN # is scratched on)
The transom wood is not in great condition, and I've thought to replace it anyway. But I could make it thicker and stronger.
I've picked up a 9.9 HP, and am not too worried about it, but looked at some15/18 for the same price. I need to dunk it in a bucket.
But is the limitation the strength of the transom - the weight of the motor, boat balance - or the force of movement through the water?
Or {D} - all of the above?
