Ririe Walleye
#45
{quote]MMDon: "I guess you will really be upset with our new proposal then. We our currently working on a letter writing campaign from biologists and fishermen to do everything possible to eradicate the walleye statewide. Salmon Falls shouldn't be that hard to do an eradication program on. This effort will certainly help to prevent bucket biologists from moving fish in the future!" [/quote]

From everything I have read on this thread there are no successful sustaining walleye in the state. Ririe is yet to be determined although I think I remember a comment that it was possible they were reproducing there but to soon to tell. If that is the case then to stop the stocking of them would basically eradicate them over time.

Why would you want that at Salmon Falls or Onieda? They have been in both waters for a time now and there are no reports (that I know of) of them getting out into other areas and wrecking havoc. If it is because they compete with the other non native fish then the logic is flawed.
I can see the concern for them in Ririe as they were not introduced intentionally, whether from a mistaken planting or a bucket guy, either way unintentional or illegal. (I think there is a difference there between unintentional and illegal, they are not the same thing.....depending if one was from wrong fish in the stocking truck.)

I do not see how removing them everywhere would deter other bucket planters. I would think it would encourage them. Sure, they would be discovered in the waters and know someone did it but I don't understand how that would change someones mind about doing that. I just don't get how removing them from all waters is a benefit at all. With that thought process do we get rid of brook trout everywhere? Brown trout and mackinaw? Even in the waters where there are no cutthroat? What about the pike in the northern part of the state? Are they native? I do not know any of the rumblings or gossip from the locals up that way or F&G but I have not heard anyone complain about them in the waters up there. Seems from everything I have read it is successful and everyone likes them up there. Perch? Kokanee?

Why are the walleye in waters they have become established in and are stocked in a problem? Are you pulling our leg? When reservoirs are made we have already messed with the water system and if something can be done successfully to make it viable for recreation without messing with the outlying enviroment again then that should be pursued. It sounds like the only thing successful at Ririe were the kokanee after the reservoir was put in place and the cuts can't run up and down to the snake like they used to. I have heard that the walleye were the only fish that took off so to say in Onieda although I don't know enough about the smallmouth there to debate that. Sounds like the kokanee is the only thing that has changed at Salmon Falls since walleye were introduced. Is that from studies or just old timers telling that? I don't know anything about what either Onieda or Salmon Falls were before the reservoirs but I would guess Onieda was cutthroat and Salmon Falls were rainbow in the drainages which the dams messed with anyways.

The Ririe thing seems to be open for debate on the origin of them, and regardless it should be a concern. I don't see a bounty on them or a no limit possesion on them so F&G seems to be taking a wait and see approach.

Anyways, did anyone catch any there this winter icefishing? I for one am more curious about this lake now and will plan on spending a day there this summer just to check it out. It wasn't on my list of places for this summer before but I am more curious about it now.
Ok, enough here from me.
