I used to use the palomar, but it just wont hold up under the strain of a solid hookset.
With mono, the palomar rules.
With fluoro, the palomar is dangerous. There is a loop during the final cinch down process that cuts back into the line that wraps around the hook eye.
The fluorocarbon crystal is a much harder material than the supple mono we are used to, and it actually can cut into itself.
I have started using the uni knot almost exclusively for most of my fishing applications.
*Drop shot rig -
you have to practice, but you can still make the hook ride horizontally. Try putting the tag end back through the eye of the hook from above.
*Line-to-leader connections-
a double uni knot is killer for line to leader combinations, line-to-line, and even braid to fluoro. Small enough to reel through your guides and cast.
*Tying Directly-
Not much can beat the strength of a uni knot when tying directly to your lure or hook. The bulk of the knot protects it from damage from rocks and mussels.
Try it out! There are a number of awesome knots out there, but this one is simple and the strength can't be beat.
