I am seeing that you could go even lower. Like even with that plywood in the front. Your motor mount should still clear. Reason, you could park it loaded in your garage, and it would be lower than the top of you SUV. But adding a tail gate, you could be creating a wind dam.
Leave the back open for flow through and lower that top toon will give you a few more miles a gallon I am sure.
