Sorry about the misidentification - I don't know squat about fish with whiskers. The gill plate of the catfish was hooked into the inner gills of the crappie and they were connected good. I had to use pliers to get the catfish out. It didn't look like the spines played a part. The crappie was clearly trying to eat it probably couldn't swallow it because it was too big and couldn't spit it out because the gill plate was stuck. I hope I don't die that way.
