Stop the backslashes or at least learn how to minimize the birds nest. First, peel off about 60 yards of line. Then put some clear tap on the spool, reel up the line.
The next step is to adjust the spool tension knob on side of the reel. Looks like a cap and is next to the star drag. Now push the release, the lure should fall at a medium speed, not to fast and faster than molasses.
With the tape under 60 yards of line, if you backlash it doesn't go very deep and you can pick it out easier.
Once you have mastered this type of fishing you can remove the tape. Also works on very windy days.
