Gulf of Mexico Federal Regulations Update
#2
I love seeing the federal regulation posts. I hope that the GMFMC is using actual scientific data to update amendments to fishing regulations, and not just guessing like other federal fishery managment councils do in other areas.

The SAFMC notes they are using their "best guess" in regards to new bans, limits, and seasons. The most recent ban to Black Sea Bass is the perfect example, as hundreds of pissed off anglers showed up in Charleston, SC to dispute the change in regs by implementing a ban on BSB from February 12th thru June 1st. Previously, they put a 1 fish limit on Weakfish, which is absolutely silly. I wonder where some of the federal fishery board members come from, and where they left their common sense when they started making up, and I mean making up, new regulations to attempt and strong arm covered US States into enforcing.

Many federal fishery managment councils use federal funding as leverage to insure that the state DNR offices enforce the Federal size and catch limits. The reason this works is because many state's DNR offices don't recieve citation moneys and such when enforcing natural resource laws, instead, it goes into the states general fund. We as charter captains, commercial fisherman, and recreational anglers in the great state of South Carolina are coming together to combat irresponsible catch limits and seasons on fishing that are not backed by hard biological data. We are pushing for money created by DNR citations and law enforcement intervention to be recycled back into the natural resources department, rather than the general state fund. By doing this, the state of SC will no longer require Federal Funds to maintain the DNR offices and conservation efforts, there for not being strong armed into the enforcement of regulation that make no sense or are not backed by firm data.

The economy of the fishing and wildlife industry is as fragile as it's ever been. In this economy, we can't afford to have it suffer because some jerk off has a bright idea to put a ban on something, so he can look like he's working to justify his position and his pay check.

Now, the boating market, fuel market, bait and tackle manufacturers and distributers, and anyone or anything associated with the fishing industry, rather it be commercial or recreation, is going to take a huge hit. Quite possibly a hit so hard, that the entire industry and it's counter parts may not be able to recover.

Stay tunned as anglers rise up against the hypocrocy.
