Advice: Best type PFD for tube?
#40
Good luck, seems like you have a good choice for the type of outings you take.

I do 90% small rivers and creeks where I am are very close to shore or can even stand on the bottom for rescue in most places. I rank a good stream walking stick as more useful than than any PFD, for the dangers you are likely to encounter. It is extremely unlikely that I would ever need or use any PFD, with few exceptions. That would be when I brave rapids, hit deep water countercurrents where there is high banks or get knocked out by a tree limb, or rock and go over. That's why I like inflatable types that loop over shoulders because they tend to bunch up at the front of the chest and keep your face out of water. I've always been mystified that class III and fishing vests are allowed on canoes and don't have to be worn, as they would appear essentially useless for the unconscious threat, the only time you are likely to need one....
[#000000]I'll definitely try it out before I use it for the tube. It's only rated Class III (see below), so it isn't rated to float an unconscious person face up or for use far from shore or in rough water. While anything is possible, I don't intend, any time soon, to do anything where there is much probability of getting knocked out or in rough water or offshore. I think this should be sufficient security for what I plan on doing. I figure that If I ever decide to get more adventurous I can always get higher rated vest that is less comfortable and convenient.[/#000000]

[#000000]Flotation Aid
Good for calm, inland water, or where there is a good chance of fast rescue.
Advantages:
• Generally the most comfortable type.
• Designed for activity marked on the device.
• Available in many styles vests.
DiSadvantages:
• May have to tilt head back to avoid face-down.
• Wearer's face may be covered by waves.
• Not for extended survival in rough water.
