i have started to avoid confrontation when i am steelhead or salmon fishing. after the stupid and horrible things i have seen and had happen to me through the years i dont just go up to somebody and say hey you are breaking the law. but i did talk to this kid i asked him where he hooked it and he lied to me and told me in the mouth.( i beleive this is one good indication that he knew it was illegal.) the kid wasnt 12 or 15 years he was an older teenager around 17 or 18 i would say. at that age i was fully aware of the laws involving fishing not just steelhead. if he was a 17 year old or 18 year old that shot a deer illegally (say a doe in a buck only unit.) would you go up to him and say hey by the way did you know thats illegal? would you try to educate him on how it was wrong for him to do that instead of call fish and game? the fact is is that it is a LAW not a rule. if they wouldnt have left when we got there waited for us to leave then go back to the same spot and start trying to snag those fish again i probably would have not said anything but that right there tells me they were completely aware that it was against the law for them to snag those fish and they didnt care they were breaking the law they were going to try and do it any ways. its like saying its ok for me to use illegal drugs as long as nobody is watching.
