Leaky, you are correct about their temperature sensitivity.
The areas where tilapia have been caught have all got hot springs in the area. They also have tilapia farms in the area. They are undoubtedly escapies. Some might breed too, but I don't know what conditions they need for that. I doubt if they will colonize very far if they do.
I think that in the summer they can spread out in the rivers, but concentrate back close to the spring areas if they are going to survive. Judging from the size of some caught, it would be a good guess that some at least have survived the winters.
By the way that is a huge tilapia that you caught!!
