I'm no ice fisherman. I've done it a few times but haven't been bitten by the bug. Too much gear for me I guess. I'm one of those fly fishing "snobs" mentioned earlier. I have one ice fishing/dog related story, but no firm opinion on the subject, other than people should be responsible for their kids and dogs.
A friend took me ice fishing at Clark Canyon res. on really windy day. Did I mention "really windy"? I had a pair of Thinsulate gloves, and I dropped one of them. The wind started moving it in the direction of Montana's nether regions, with me in not-so-hot pursuit. I saw that it was going to blow right past some folks who'd driven a pickup onto the ice. I hollered to try to get them to intercept it, but they didn't catch on in time. I waved them off, and started to trudge back to our setup, when my buddy started waving for me to turn around. The guy in the pick-up had gotten his black Lab out of the camper shell on his truck, and sent it after the glove, which he chased down and retrieved in short order. I was sure glad to see that pooch on that particular day. He was well trained and well controlled, and saved me a bit of misery as well as an expensive glove.
