Looks like I'm not the only one! Apparently people can surprise even the cynical me. Last week I was fishing the pumphouse area and I landed some 6 white bass near a large family group of anglers. It was slow in that area so I walked a small distance away but still within sight and punched in some new holes. Started to to nail whities on every drop, the usual fun began. I did have a little weird feeling that maybe I should have left my backpack chuck full of gear and my ice chisel so far away from me, so I did glance back every so often. Everything seem fine and undisturbed. But the action was so fast I couldn't turn my head every second of course. Of course within minutes they also came right on over and wanted to borrow my chisel to chisel holes right next to me even though they had augers. I refused to allow them to borrow the chisel since I've had more than one incident of chisels sliding down holes. I was polite about it and told them their augers will work just fine. They start to pound on the ice with their auger hope it would create a hole. I almost cracked up, what a way to ruin the blades! But after the action slowed a little, I decided I'd better go back and get my backpack and gear and pick up the first few whities. Sure enough the family fishing that area was gone and so were my fish. I felt lucky the chisel and pack weren't taken as well, but it was still quite a shock to have something stolen in broad daylight like that right in my presence. From now on everything stays right next to me!
