My UL tube project...
#46
Sorry, I've failed to keep up with the crossposting... I'll try to catch you guys up - been busy and learning a LOT.

Quick update:

I never did model the final valve type on the seat bladder. I was concerned about how the curvature would affect it (like on the test drybag). I modified the baffling inside somewhat to get a nice spherical surface where I'd be mounting the valve and built another prototype.

Looks good I think!

That is all...

and...

Well, with the long break from work and fighting the urge to get out and fish some rubber trout or pound on GT5, I got some work done on the tube.

Initial inflation:

I'm having some difficulty with sealing the long seam and I'll have to go back and get the seal all the way to the template in a few places. I think if my iron had a straight edge instead of a convex one, it'd be easier to concentrate heat against the form. I may buy another iron and beltsand an edge to get that feature as all the irons (for clothes) I've seen has the "iron shape".

I did have one other minor mishap... When hot-cutting the slits for the d-rings to pass through, on my LAST cut I forgot to put the backer board between the skins... DAMN... Easy patch since I hand'nt sealed up the perimeter yet.

Work continues...

Interesting thing about the valve location is that the fabric is "square" with the tube directly behind the pilot. Because of the way the tubes tighten up with inflation, the weave then twists on axis on the 'toons. The valve actually gets pulled oblong slightly. I may consider moving it to the back where it'll get a square stretch, but I don't see it being a leak issue. Just interesting...

I'll leave it aired up tonight to see if it loses air, but I suspect it won't. Maybe I'll get going on the seat tomorrow...

and finally...

Did a bit more testing and I figured out where the air is going. Need to do a bit of re-sealing of a few spots and that should take care of things...

I knew I wasn't crazy. [Image: wink.gif] Need a few more special jigs and fixtures now...
