I did the PVC pipe many years ago when going to Alaska to bring 8 ( 4 were large eyed heavy spinning rods) rods. It was 7" , cap on one end and threaded on the other. Wrapped the rods in a thin blanket and slid them in. Worked great and fastened it to the rental car roof rack. The airline did drop it on the way home and cracked it on one one end but the rods were ok. It was heavy to carry but had a single strap to put over your shoulder.
For a couple of rods I would buy a case or try making one out of 4" Double wall drain pipe and it would be a lot lighter and shouldn't break in the cold like PVC might but it could bend a little.
I now have a Bazoka rod holder that is 6" in dia and another one brand that adjusts for the length of the rod.
