I've done that on several occassions when traveling up to alaska and spokane on fishing trips. works great.
as for the person who was concrned it being mistaken for a pipe bomb....that's a bit far fetched and i wouldn't even consider worrying about that. you can certainly expect that they'll open and inspect te contents, but they're pretty much doing that with all checked in luggage. just be sure you've got he outside of the tube well labled for owner identity in the event it gets misdirected to a different airport than your detination.
