the steelhead already wander. i had a officer tell me last spring that they will have hatchery fish in almost every tributary. he also told me they will spawn in these tributaries. like was said alone the hatcheries began as a way to get the wild population back. like the chinook at sawtooth the first year they had the damn they had under 15 fish return. now there are many they did that threw hatchery fish not the wild fish. i also believe if the hatchery fish spawn naturaly there eggs and fry will have the same challenges and the strong will survive. i am not sure what stock they used for the steelhead stock but many of the sockeye eggs came from oregon stock. but in due time they will geneticly become stock gened fish, from the same challenges that there predisessors had to endure.
