I think that F&G should open Henry's all year with the exception of being closed from May 1 to June 30. If anglers are only keeping 5% of the fish in the lake, then those few extra winter months of ice fishing will not add up to much difference at all. I would prefer to see the spawning fish go undisturbed during the month of May and June time frame which would also alleviate the dock slaughter problem.
If you look at the current proposals, this is pretty much the way F&G is leaning with the whole state. Many places next year will be open year round with the exceptions being smaller tributaries where fish spawn around the May/June time frame. This makes the rules much easier to understand and very simple and at the same time I think will help the fish population quite a bit by allowing fish to spawn without the harassment of anglers.
Many people say don't fix it if it ain't broke. I agree, but F&G must have a reason that they think they can change the rules and that by changing the rules, things will be better.
You do not have to look far to see things that people thought were a great idea years ago and are now finding out that is not the case. The Green River comes to mind where the mentality of anglers years ago went from keep everything to today where anglers C&R everything and now there are problems again with stunted fish and over population. Maybe Henry's is starting to suffer from this same mentality? Only time will tell. [crazy]
