Looks like I am going to have to keep more of an open mind about what to fish for when I am out and about. I haven't tried to target any species other than trout in some of those places, and I sure haven't been to many places on the Portneuf yet.
Seems like most of the time when I go fishing, I get in a rut and only visit the few tried and true places, but this last year I have focused more on the areas closer to me, and I have really been surprised on some of what I have found so far. It has been a great adventure exploring for fish where I thought that there were none! "We boldly go where none but the cows have been before!"
Thank you Jeremy for some of your tips on access and for reviving my interest and faith in the Portneuf. It is a much abused river, but still contains some great fish. Now I just have to find them!
By the way about the cutthroats in Deep Creek, they are few and far between because they come from a small residual native population that is in the very tiny streams above there. They only come down in good water years because of culvert passage problems. F&G is working to resolve the passage issues.
These trout are pure Bonneville native cutts that have survived there from Lake Bonneville times to now. Please release them if possible. Personally I have never caught one in the reservoir either, but I know that they are there and how they get in there, so it makes it easy for me to believe when I hear about them being caught.
