Trying catching crawdads. If their shells are soft, it means they're in molt. That's when they become prime forage for cats. Put them in some garlic so cats will smell the bait and reach them first.
As to poultry, try gizzards.
And I tried dog food once. I used something called a "doggy breathmint". I had a hit and fought for 20 min. only to have my line snap. The breath mints are expensive, though. Around $13 a bag. I only used it because I had a piece in my pocket (I have two dogs and I use the treats for training) and I was running low on cut bait.
