I have tried to catch shad from the boat with light out. Never had any luck. they seem to scatter right before the net hits. If you have someone with you and kill the light right before it hits you can pick up a few.

I have tried the same thing with mixed results. Started with the light pretty deep to attract shad. Draw the light up to the boat and the shad may follow right up to the surface. Kill the light as the net is tossed and the shad do not seem to scatter as fast. However, most of the bait swims under the net before it can close in deep water. Shortening the line on the net and adding additional weight around the edge of the net seems to help it close quicker. Even with all this effort I have never loaded the net up, like you, just netting a few at a time, sometimes making it worth the effort, sometimes not. [:p]
