We're using Daiwa Kokanee rods-super noodley, and we don't really "set" the hook; sometimes you gotta give it a yank to get it off the clip, but most fish are coming off when they're about halfway in.
I didn't think about cutting the trolling motor, I'd have to completely turn it off because we're trolling so slow to begin with. That's a good point, though, I'll try that next time and see if it helps.
