Not sure what's up with that. The only problem I've had with hook ups is a fishing partner that can't break the habit of "setting the hook" coming off the DR. If you're losing them while releasing from the DR then I'd say that might be one problem.
I have ultra light kokanee rods that help and very small release clips. When we get a take down I just begin to reel up and try not to jerk against the release clip.
If you're losing them later after they've come off the DR it still may be the quality or surety of your initial hook up?
Other than the above problems I've been through there are also those days when they just don't stick...
