Best crawdad bait I have ever used is squawfish. Better than bacon, chicken, or cat food. I tried an experiment at CJ Strike dam once, where I placed one trap with squawfish at one end of the dam, and one with bacon at the other end and left them while I fished all night. It was no contest. The squawfish trap had THREE TIMES more dads in it.
They also make awesome cut bait for catfish. Whenever I catch a bigger one, I fillet it for catfish bait, and save what's left over for the crawdad traps.
Seriously, give them a try instead of throwing them back next time you hook one when you're trout fishing.
