If you want close and big then catfish should be your target. You got Lake Lowell and the Snake River within a short drive. Even Caldwell Ponds has some big cats. My buddy got one a few days ago over 10 lbs out of the ponds. Try the Caldwell dam at the lake or the river at the airport in Homedale. Search the posts for more info on local cat holes.
