If you go with the mini troll it does have a depth counter but it doesn't work very good. Instead You just count how many turns of the handle you let out, each turn equals one foot. If you plan on using your down rigger while your floating the river fishing for catfish I would recommend having a really good pair of fencing pliers hovering over your cable at all times. Having your ball snag on a sunken tree while floating in a stiff current could turn you into catfish food.
