It's a girl thing! Nothing wrong with pretty.
The more I fish for panfish and bass the flashier I get! I have a fly with a sparkly red body and chartreuse marabou tail that seems to be a semi- universal favorite. So far I have caught trout, bass, bluegills, perch, and crappie on it. What they take it for -- I have no idea. I think it must just be the shock factor. Their mouths drop open in awe as it goes by and they automatically get hooked. [laugh]
But then again I also tie what I call a "Ratty Dragon" which is about as ugly as you can get! So who knows, but pretty flies do catch fishermen.
