they will hit worms under a bobber.
When I target them, I use large peices of cut bait under a hard ball size bobber. I have caugt them in the day time, but after dark past 10 pm has turned up quite a few.
I have even caught them though the ice on live minnow.

Inconclusion, day time I would go with cut bait under a bobber, and night cut bait or dead minnow under a large bobber.
hook size would be the same as you would use on bass, and test, 6-12 pounds.
