The lids do come off (similar to Tupperware containers, but more cheap. I keep the lids on, even if I have the zippers, because when you transport your Float-Tube by it's handle or with straps on your back, it pl;aces it in a vertical position, and items in the plastic containers (without the lids) could flip out and then get jammed around the containers and stray inside the side pocket.

Of course, using lures in these containers could get tangled themselves, since they donb't have internal seperated spots for individual lures like a Plano fishing container specifically made for fishing.
