Are The Sand Bass On Strike?
#24
No offense taken--I guess there are just too many captains and fishing styles to narrow it down to one guy. However, I can still remember the worst captain on the worst trip I've ever been on. It was out of MDR a few years ago--I don't know his name--but he was an older guy--and I think he's gone now. It was a twilight trip for sand bass. After about a half hour boat ride, we anchored up. Usually the captain comes on the intercom to announce that he's found some good meter marks, the fish are on the bottom, 25 feet down, etc. Well, this guy never got on the intercom the entire trip--just stayed up in the wheelhouse, and the only time he came out was to yell at the deckhands. I remember this one deckhand--a really young guy who was really helpful to the passengers--getting screamed at by "Captain Bligh" for not getting his food from the galley fast enough--cursing at the kid like he was some kind of slave. Well, after the captain turned around and went into the wheelhouse, the kid flipped him the "double bird." When he saw that I had seen him, be seemed kind of embarrassed, so to put him at ease, I also gave Captain Bligh the double digit salute and we both laughed. Anyway, we stayed in that one spot the whole night, hardly caught anything, and then without a word over the intercom, we pulled anchor and left. Lesson learned: when you fish with a captain destined for The Loser Hall Of Fame, you lose, too.
