Pick yourself up one of these if you want an ultralight but you're having a problem setting the hook:

I have an 8 footer that I use for panfishing and casting light rigs. Has enough backbone to set the hook, and at the same time is soft enough so that it won't rip the hook out of a crappie's mouth. I've landed cats up to 7 pounds on it, too. It's so sensitive you can feel every little peck and nibble.
Great rod for the price.
