wow if you told the clerk you wanted to be equipped for bluegill and this is the set-up he came up with i would say more in store training is in order ! not to disrespect your purchase. this is a reasonable " all purpose " set-up if you will only be using one rod.
as you get into fishing more you will collect many more rods. your set-up will work. i would have reservations about the 14 lb test however. the bluegill will definitely see the line and it will make casting small baits a chore. you may ask your boyfriend to tye you on a leader of 2-6 lb. test. as for lures a #10 hook with a pinch of earthworm about three feet under a quarter sized bobber is hard to beat.
