Sunset park is a convenient little fishing hole. I started fishing there as a kid and have continued through my adult life. For a few years, I fished there exclusively, forgoing the long drive to lake mead and the uncertain shore conditions due to water droppage. On average the catfish I caught were bigger than what I pulled in at the lake. I've caught some big cats at Sunset up to 7lbs.
There was a year when I discovered Hog Wild dip bait (the most disgusting thing you'll ever smell). You couldn't even set your pole down without getting hit and we had 20+ fish in some 2 hours trips. I tried Hod Wild at the lake and in later years at sunset but it seemed that it had lost it's magic. I don't use it anymore because it's hard to find AND IT STINKS!
For sunset Cats I tend to use night-crawlers or shrimp. Chovies and sardines work too. As a kid we would catch them on hot dogs or velveeta. Just goes to show that they will eat just about anything.
I've tried to catch bass there but never got anything over 6". We fished for trout when I was younger but I seem to prefer night-fishing for cats since I don't like getting up before dawn and it's so hot during the summer days.
I went out there 3 times earlier in this season and was skunked each time. I haven't been back yet but I will soon.
What I love about Sunset park is that you can go fishing on a whim with a moments notice. I live 10 minutes away so its a lot easier to throw together a trip to sunset than it is to the lake. It is cheaper as well.
There are some big bass, cats, and carp in Sunset. It seems that these species have managed to reproduce on their own. I don't think the stocked trout ever survive the warm season so the trout always seem to be dinks.
