I have used the borax method with iodized salt and sugar and it worked fine. Caught quite a few salmon last year on this roe. I add 1/3 of each into a container and mix it well. I then dry the skeins and cut into the size of chunks you want for bait. Then put them into a plastic container in layers adding the mixture on each layer. You want enough to cover each layer. Put the lid on and then rotate the container so the eggs are completely covered. Put in the fridge. Every 12 hours rotate the container. You will notice that after the first twelve hours there will be quite a bit of liquid in the container. This is the fluid from the eggs. After about another 12 hours or so, the eggs will reabsorb this liquid with the mixture and cure the eggs. Do this for 2-3 days. The longer you rotate them in the fridge, the tougher the eggs become. After that they are ready to use. You can also freeze them in the container after the 2-3 days. Before freezing sprinkle a little plain Borax over the eggs and rotate, then freeze. I am still using the ones from last salmon season for steel heading this spring and still have some left over. You can also add some red food coloring if you want a darker egg and another thing to add is Anise to the mixture. This method worked great for me and holds up well in the sac. They are a bit sticky, but no big deal to me since I am in a river fishing.

I did keep some steel head eggs this spring and used Pautzke Borax O Fire Egg Cure. Sportman's carries it as does some Walmarts. Quick and simple to use since all you need is a Zip Loc bag when you clean the fish. You dry the eggs, cut them to size if needed, place in the Zip Loc and add Pautzke Borax O Fire Egg Cure. Rotate for a bit and throw in the cooler or fridge. So far it looks like it has worked ok, but I have not fished with these yet, so no idea how they will hold up.
