Keeping Fish Ethics & Courtesy & the law
#50
Very well put Westlopecut. I use to look at white fish as a trash fish as that was what I taught as a kid. My grandfather was a trout guy, and that was all we ever fished for. Everything else in the water was a trash fish. Over the years I have become better informed and a few weeks ago I actually kept a couple 18-19" white fish I caught and took them home. I filleted them and battered them and cooked them up. Not to bad really. I would have to say they are close to planter trout in flavor and one more row of small bones. They are fun to fight and I am careful on the release also.

I also keep quite a few trout. I grew up learning that a good fisherman is the one who can go out and catch and keep a limit in a few hours. Over the years I have learned that keeping everything I catch is not such a good idea. I have become a better fisherman, and I find it more fun to fish all day instead of keeping a limit by 9am. I C&R a lot now compared to when I was younger. I have many days now that I go fishing and catch 15-20 fish, but come home with none since I know I still have a few fillets in the freezer. I do smoke a lot of my fish and occasionally take a few to work for a lunch get together. I have also learned to fillet the trout I keep and not smoke. I put the fillets in a zip loc freezer bag and add water so all of the fillet is covered. This will keep the fillet from freezer burning for a lot longer than just throwing them in the freezer. It also saves freezer space as they stack nicely and you do not have heads, tails, and a backbone taking up extra space. As far as warm water fish, I just do not fish them enough to actually have to many in the freezer. Is there a such thing as having to many Perch/BG fillets? So far I have not had that problem.

When it comes to Suckers or Carp tho, I will kill them, all of them, and throw them back. Leaving them on the shore is quite smelly and messy and I hate stepping on them. I will throw them on the ice how ever when ice fishing. I know they will be gone in a matter of hours if not minutes as there are plenty of hungry eagles, hawks, and osprey flying around during the winter since they can not fish when the water is froze.

As far as telling other people how to fish, that is not me. I am not going to ruin my day arguing with someone about how they are fishing or acting. If they are doing something illegal, I will call fish and game and go on my way and let F&G do their job. I have had my share of run ins with the village idiots. I just pack my stuff and go fish some where else. Most of the time I find that fishing these new areas instead of the normal easy access places where the village idiots fish, are actually better to fish. I have a few village idiots that were under the Pasimeroi bridge I should thank. Because of them I ended up catching my largest salmon down stream in a better fishing area without all the problems.

Just remember, if all the village idiots, drunks, and down right rude people fishing around us disappeared tomorrow, what would that makes us?
