I know this post started as a salmon fishing question but turned into a boat fishing how to but I just had to throw my 2 bits worth in about boat fishing
You about have to learn the boat fishing etiquette on each river you fish on. For instance I learned how close you can get to the bank fisherman on The Feather in California when large rocks were hucked at us. I learned that you can't anchor in this hole because it is a back trolling hole. You are not supposed to anchor in this hole because you drift the boat and jig with a crippled herring jig.
The way you are supposed to fish is usually explained to you very explicitly and it is shouted at you like you should know how we fish this hole.
Next time you arrive at your honey hole and someone is anchored or backtrolling when you want to anchor, move up to the next hole and fish it how you want. Maybe it's their first time on that river and they might not know all the rules of that river. Next time get there a little ealier and fish it how you want.
