When I use them I put them on right at the hook. It goes bead maybe two, hook with a chunk of cut bait or a worm. I like to think that they can see the color, but I don't know if they do. I also have put a couple of them on there stacking them to give a little sound. Again I don't know if that is what is happening but I have had some luck with cats this year so who knows. Ron
